Friday Fabulosity: Christina of Denmark

Every so often, on a Friday, I’ll write a bit about a woman I think is basically brilliant for one reason or another.Christina of Denmark (1521-1590) was earmarked by Henry VIII as the fourth of his many, many wives when she was just sixteen (and a widow, to boot) after he saw the above picture of her. He was told to turn his attentions elsewhere after she reportedly told an English ambassador that “If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England’s disposal.” So he ended up marrying Anne of Cleves instead. Oddly enough, her second husband had been betrothed to Anne- a fact which would later be brought up in Henry’s annulment of that marriage (welcome to Tudor Wife Swap…)

It does make you wonder what she thought of Henry’s ongoing marital strife…
